# Developer API

> Set Aside Money API: Set Aside Money developer API reference.

Read and update a Set Aside Money account from your own code. The API supports accounts and balances, transactions, Expenses, funding schedules, and analytics. It can
also make changes, if you give a key permission to.

The base URL is:

```
https://api.setaside.money/v1
```

## What you can build

A few things people actually do with it:

* Export transactions to a spreadsheet on a schedule.
* Post a weekly summary of what is set aside into Slack.
* Let an Apple Shortcut file a purchase against the right Expense from your phone.
* Reconcile a side business against a separate Expense without touching the app.

## Getting access

The developer API is included with **Pro** and **Max**. Create a key in the app under
**Settings, Developer API**, then read the [quickstart](/api-reference/quickstart).

A key acts on the Set Aside Money account that created it, with the access you chose. It is not an
OAuth app, so there is no consent screen and nothing to register. If you want software to act on
someone else's account, that is not something this version supports.

## What to read next

* [Quickstart](/api-reference/quickstart) makes your first request.
* [Authentication](/api-reference/authentication) covers keys, scopes, and revocation.
* [Errors](/api-reference/errors) is worth reading before you write your error handling, not after.
* [Rate limits](/api-reference/rate-limits) explains the two limits and how to stay inside them.

## Machine-readable spec

The full OpenAPI 3.1 description lives at
[api.setaside.money/v1/openapi.json](https://api.setaside.money/v1/openapi.json). It needs no
authentication, so you can generate a client before you have a key.

## Conventions

**Money is always integer cents.** `2500` is \$25.00. There are no floats anywhere in the API,
because binary floating point cannot represent decimal currency exactly and rounding drift in a
budgeting tool is not a rounding error, it is a wrong balance.

**Dates are `YYYY-MM-DD`.** Timestamps are ISO 8601 in UTC.

**Expenses are called Expenses.** In the app, money you protect for a known cost sits in an Expense.
The API uses the same word.
