# Expenses and Goals

> Set money aside for bills, recurring costs, and savings goals.

An **Expense** holds money for a known cost. A **Goal** helps you build toward something you want to save for. Both keep funded money separate from Free-to-Spend.

## Choose a funding approach

Use a target when you know the amount you need. Use a fixed contribution when you want to set aside a chosen amount each payday. Assign the funding schedules that should contribute.

Rent, groceries, subscriptions, insurance, and an emergency fund can each have their own place. Groups help you organize related Expenses.

## Target, contribution, and balance

| Number | Meaning |
| - | - |
| Target | What you are working toward. |
| Contribution | What a funding occurrence plans to set aside. |
| Balance | Money actually set aside now. |

Saving an Expense does not mean its target is covered. Review its balance and funding status.

## Paying from an Expense

Assign the transaction to the Expense that covers it. Review the assignment when a cost changes or a transaction belongs elsewhere.

## Adjusting your plan

Edit targets and schedules as your needs change. Transfer funded money when you want to change its purpose.
